Ellard-Willson was founded in the 1950’s and is a firm rich with heritage and a broad range of projects. Similarly, Rybka, Smith and Ginsler Limited, founded in the 1930’s, shares a parallel history and a deeply aligned culture. Following its previous merger with Marshal Macklin Monaghan, rybka re-established itself as an independent company in 2021.

CORPORATE BACKGROUND

Ellard-Willson was established in 1954 and specializes in the provision of mechanical and electrical building services and site engineering. Its goal is excellence in the provision of these services. Its best-known project is the CN Tower, a landmark on Toronto’s horizon. The company is owned by three shareholders, all of whom are active in the company’s operations. Their office is located in Markham. Staffing is currently forty, and includes
nine professional engineers.
Over the past 6 decades, many thousands of projects have been completed, including shopping centres, office buildings, schools and universities, recreation facilities, stadiums, hotels, theatres, museums, libraries, residences, hospitals, computer centres, television broadcast facilities and industrial plants. In the past decade, retrofit and renovation projects have been an important part of the company’s business.
The firm has worked with numerous clients, including Wal-Mart, Lowe’s, Fed Ex, Sears, Ryerson, U of T, Apotex, Bayer, TSN and most of the School Boards in the area surrounding Toronto. With many of these clients, performance has been rewarded with repeat assignments.

Ellard-Willson’s work has been recognized with numerous awards for the efficient use of energy in building systems. The firm is at the forefront of technology for thermal storage systems, with expertise in both ice storage and chilled water storage. The stratified chilled water system at Atria II and III has received an Award of Merit and Award of Distinction from Ontario Hydro. Studies and investigations of other energy conservation applications such as heat reclaim air and water systems, energy modelling, high efficiency motors, high efficiency lighting, etc., have resulted in substantial operational savings to owners. Ellard-Willson has the knowledge and experience to apply energy conservation techniques and sustainable design to projects of all sizes. Ellard-Willson is a registered member of Canada Green Building Council and employs LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) accredited professionals.
Ellard-Willson is very professional in its approach to project design and management. During the design stage, Ellard-Willson seeks feedback from clients and provides sound advice. A particular strength of the firm is project management and the expectation that contractors adhere to contract documents. A valued feature of service provided is that the firm’s principals are “hands-on”. Projects are completely managed, designed and administered by the principals from conceptual design through detailed design, to completion of contract and building occupancy. During the construction phase, all questions are answered and disputes are resolved in a timely manner. Project follow-up and deficiency resolutions are given particular attention.
